Alta Heights Elementary School in Napa Valley Unified School District (NVUSD) recently completed a transformative modernization project aimed at updating some of their classrooms and learning spaces. This update to Alta Heights’ facilities focused on creating flexible, student-centered learning spaces designed to foster active learning and collaboration. The initiative targeted the areas most frequently utilized by students and staff for learning, leveraging innovative furniture from MiEN Company to develop functional and modern spaces.
In this post, we'll take a look at:
Classrooms and hallways received fresh coats of paint, new flooring and lighting, general repairs, and new furnishings from MiEN Company. These changes have significantly enhanced the learning experience for students, resulting in more inviting and engaging spaces that better meet the educational needs of students and teachers. Creating an environment that promotes collaboration and engagement.
Alta Heights partnered with MiEN to implement ergonomic and functional furniture tailored to the needs of students across grade levels. Upper grades received new mobile and adjustable SBM tables with markerboard surface and paired with FFL Pneumatic Swivel Chairs, which allow easy rearranging of the classroom to accommodate various individual, group, and lecture layouts. In lower grades, Alta Heights opted to use FFL 4-Leg Chairs paired with collaborative tables, which offer more stability for developing learners and integrated storage trays for easy access to materials.
Many classrooms implemented functional and inviting reading nooks that encourage students to spend more time reading. Students can easily browse their teacher’s collection of reading materials which are neatly displayed on KIO Straight Mobile Bookcases. Previously, students would read at their desks, but now they can lounge on various FLEX seating options for a more comfortable reading experience. FLEX Straight benches with casters, FLEX Small Round Stools, and FLEX Lite Bow-Tie Stools all provide relaxed seating that can be moved around the reading nook––and the classroom––as educational needs change. FLEX Steps EVO Storage provides a tiered seating option so students can read together in small groups, and teachers benefit from additional hidden storage.
Teachers now have mobile desks that enable them to teach from a more active position that promotes greater interaction and engagement with students. To create functional teacher stations, Alta Heights selected HMU Quad Base Side Tables, which are height-adjustable and fully mobile. These desks allow educators to move seamlessly around the classroom, providing support where it’s needed most. Equipped with wireless document cameras, teachers can showcase student work, conduct demonstrations, and transition smoothly between lectures, presentations, and collaborative activities. The compact size and mobility of these desks ensures teachers can remain engaged and responsive to students all over the classroom, while keeping their most essential teaching resources right at their side.
To inspire creativity and collaborative hands-on learning, some classrooms have been equipped with CRE8 Makerspace Tables paired with FFL lab stools. These maker areas provide students with space for large or group projects. Storage cabinets beneath the tables keep tools and materials organized and accessible. These large maker tables empower students to experiment, collaborate, and innovate in a flexible environment.
Alta Heights incorporated multipurpose mobile storage solutions to encourage flexibility in their modernized learning spaces. KIO Class mobile storage units with doors and interior shelves function as student cubbies, keeping desks and work areas clear of clutter. Students store their assignments and resources in bins, which they are able to remove from the cubby and take to their desk while they work. In younger grades, some classrooms received KIO Storage Benches with built-in storage trays, which also allow for easily accessible storage of student materials. In addition, some storage units include integrated whiteboards, which double as collaborative workstations at student height.
Alta Heights’ modernization project demonstrates how thoughtful upgrades to existing learning facilities can truly transform the educational experience. By integrating new flexible and mobile furniture, the school has created a welcoming and adaptable environment that fosters collaboration and engagement.
